Oklahoma's Renewable Energy Could Increase by 62.3% by 2012

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--There are currently 13 operational plants with 1,755 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy power generation in Oklahoma. Hydroelectric leads the way with 11 powerhouses producing 1,066 MW, but wind power is not far behind with five windfarms producing 689 MW.

Oklahoma developers are looking at installing an additional 38 MW at three hydroelectric sites for an increase of a little over 2.1%, but wind developers are looking at a much larger picture with the addition of 1,056.5 MW at eight sites for an increase of wind generation by 153.2%, all to be online by the end of 2012. The total increase for renewable energy could reach 1,094 MW, or 62.3%, bringing the over total of renewable generation in Oklahoma to 2,849 MW.

Acciona Wind Energy USA (Chicago, Illinois), a subsidiary of Acciona SA (MCE:ANA) (Madrid, Spain), is building the 123-MW Red Hills Windfarm near Elk City, Oklahoma. M.A. Mortenson (Minneapolis, Minnesota) is the balance-of-plant constructor. The windfarm will have 81 1.5-MW Acciona AW-1500 wind turbine/generators. Once the windfarm is complete, Acciona has arranged for Global Energy Services USA Incorporated (GES) (Conshohocken, Pennsylvania) to operate the windfarm.
