ORLEN Lietuva Prepares for Turnarounds at Mazeikiai Refinery in Lithuania

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--ORLEN Lietuva (Juodeikiai, Lithuania) is preparing to begin a minor 14-day, plant-wide turnaround at its Mazeikiai Refinery in Lithuania. The refinery is about 125 kilometers northwest of Vilnius near the Latvian border. The turnaround is scheduled to begin March 26, and ORLEN is expecting all involved units to return to operation by April 8. ORLEN is anticipating more than $24 million in total turnaround costs. Units involved in the turnaround include the following:

• the 60,000-barrel-per-day (BBL/d) fluid catalytic cracker unit (FCCU)
• the 80,000-BBL/d Diesel Hydrotreater Unit 1
• the 54,0000-BBL/d Diesel Hydrotreater Unit 2
• 106,000-BBL/d vacuum unit

The Mazeikiai Refinery is also in the midst of a $1.6 billion modernization program. The program began at the beginning of 2010 and is expected to last until mid-2012. Projects involved in the modernization include a $200 million vacuum unit addition and a $5 million Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) unit addition. This is the second round of modernization work undertaken in the past 10 years to help the refinery meet European Union standards. ORLEN had a similar modernization program between 2006 and 2008. The Mazeikiai Refinery, which has a throughput capacity of 200,000 BBL/d, is the only refinery in the Baltic States and refines crude oil supplied primarily by Russia.
