Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Located about 30 miles north of Corpus Christi, Texas, in San Patricio County is the Papalote Creek Windfarm.
In Phase II construction at the facility, under the direction of E.ON Climate & Renewables (Austin, Texas), 87 Siemens Energy SWT-2.3-101 wind turbines were installed. Each turbine is able to produce 2.3 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy, giving Phase II construction a nameplate capacity of 200 MW.
Construction of Phase II began in the summer of 2010. D H Blattner and Sons Incorporated (Avon, Minnesota) acted as general contractor on the project. The Lower Colorado River Authority (Austin) has signed an 18-year power purchase agreement for the power generated from the Phase II construction. The renewable electricity generated is enough to power approximately 45,000 homes.
Phase I of Papalote Creek was completed in the fall of 2009 and entailed the installation of 109 Vestas wind turbines installed. The wind turbines installed in Phase I produce 180 MW of renewable energy to the grid. Although the Phase II turbines are not yet online, when the turbines begin operating, the Papalote Creek Windfarm will produce 380 MW of electricity at maximum capacity. Siemens Energy also has a service and maintenance agreement for the next two years.
