Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Perth, Australia)--Phoenix Energy Australia Pty Limited (Melbourne, Australia) selected construction giant John Holland (Pyrmont, Australia), a subsidiary of Leighton Holdings Limited (New South Wales, Australia), to provide engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services for an 80-megawatt (MW) waste-to-energy (W2E) power plant that will be located at Kwinana, Perth, Australia.
The Kwinana plant is owned by Phoenix Energy Australia, which is expected to produce 80 MW of electricity, utilizing 300,000 tons per day of residual and industrial waste materials as the primary fuel. The power plant will be able to supply electricity to 60,000 homes in Kwinana.
Phoenix has been working on this project since 2011 and has resolved several objections and issues raised from the locals at Kwinana. In May 2012, Phoenix awarded the EPC contract to John Holland, a leading engineering, contracting and services provider company.
Phoenix will be using Westinghouse Plasma Gasification Technology to build this power plant. Other related equipment to build the plant, including turbines, will be supplied by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.
When completed, the project will substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions, as well as generate up to 800 jobs during construction and about 60 full-time jobs.
"One ton of municipal solid waste processed in a thermal W2E plant, rather than land-filled, reduces greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 1 ton of carbon dioxide, and the renewable energy derived reduces reliance on oil by one barrel, or 0.25 tons of coal," said Managing Director Peter Dyson.
John Holland is currently conducting design and engineering work and will proceed with final investment decision toward the end of 2013. John Holland and Phoenix Energy will select required subcontractors for this project during 2013. Construction of the power station is estimated to take up to two years, with the expected kickoff in 2013.
