Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Developers are proposing more than 2,500 megawatts (MW) of new generation in Mississippi. If these projects are constructed, the state's generation capacity could increase by more than 15.3%, bringing its capacity up from about 16,600 MW to about 19,200 MW. New planned generation unit additions will use varied fuel sources, including gasified coal, hydroelectric, natural-gas-fired and nuclear units.
Nuclear generation leads the planned generation with plans for a 1,550 MW unit addition at the Grand Gulf Station in Port Gibson Mississippi owned by System Energy Resources Incorporated, a 90/10 joint venture of Entergy Corporation (NYSE: ETR) (New Orleans, Louisiana) and South Mississippi Electric Power Association (Hattiesburg, Mississippi).
Gasified coal is the second most popular fuel type for new generation projects in Mississippi. One project would utilize lignite coal gasified to be fired in a combined-cycle plant that could produce about 600 MW. Hydroelectric generation follows with more than 200 MW. New generation that would use natural gas could provide about 160 MW and a 40 MW biomass-fired unit.
Hydroelectric power is making a surprising addition as a major fuel, as it will utilize both conventional hydroelectric and hydrokinetic energy sources. Hydrokinetic energy is the use of normal currents that requires no dam or other impoundment like conventional hydroelectric projects and only slightly impedes navigation of the waterway. There are about 10 projects being proposed along Mississippi's portion of the Mississippi River. The hydroelectric projects are being proposed by two companies: Free Flower Power Corporation (Gloucester, Massachusetts) and Hydro Green Energy LLC (Houston, Texas).
