Plans for New Power Generation in North Carolina Could Increase Capacity by 27%

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Developers are proposing more than 7,700 megawatts (MW) of new generation in North Carolina. If these projects come to fruition, the state's generation capacity could increase by more than 27%, bringing its capacity up from about 28,500 MW to about 36,200 MW. New planned generation unit additions will use varied fuel sources, including nuclear, conventional coal, hydroelectric, natural gas, waste heat, oil, biomass and landfill gas.

The majority of new generation, about 7,500 MW, will be conventional generation. Nuclear generation leads the planned generation (57.3%) with plans for four nuclear units for 4,434 MW that will just about double the state's nuclear capacity to more than 9,400 MW. New simple-cycle and combined-cycle natural gas units will add almost 2,200 MW of intermediate load generation, increasing capacity to about 8,000 MW of natural gas generation. Expanding on its coal generation, Duke Energy Carolina LLC, a subsidiary of Duke Energy Corporation (NYSE:DUK) (Charlotte, North Carolina), has commenced construction on a sixth unit that will be 800 MW at its Cliffside Power Station.

New renewable energy projects will only make up about 200 MW or 2.5% of the new generation. Biomass/waste-fired generation will make up three-fourths of the total new generation. Hydroelectric power will follow with about 45 MW of new generation. Additional landfill gas being developed at this time only looks to make up about 1.5 MW.
