Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--On Monday morning, an explosion occurred at one of Ontario Power Generation's (OPG) coal-fired plants, the Atikokan Generating Station. The event was caused by a fire, which occurred in the station's coal handling area. The explosion caused significant damage to two side panels of the outside building. The fire was safely extinguished by the power plant's onsite emergency response team and did not require assistance from the city's fire department. There were no deaths or injuries reported by OPG. Total mechanical damages to the plant have not been confirmed as engineers have just begun initial assessments. As of Wednesday morning, the plant remained offline until officials have confirmed if damages occurred to any critical components of the turbine or boiler.
The Atikokan Generating Station is located near the town of Atikokan, Ontario (west of Thunder Bay). It consists of a coal-fired unit capable of producing 230 megawatts. The unit's turbine was manufactured by Alstom Power Incorporated and the station began operations in 1985.
Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is an Ontario based electricity generation company focused on the generation and sale of electricity in Ontario. OPG's portfolio has a total capacity of over 22,000 megawatts which makes it one of the largest power generators in North America. This fleet of power plants includes three nuclear, five fossil-fueled, and sixty-four hydroelectric facilities.
