Poland's PGE Issues Major Battery Storage Tender

(PGE) (Warsaw) has announced a tender for the construction of one the largest battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in Gryfino, in the northwest of the country.

The tender for the design and construction of a 400-megawatt (MW)/800-megawatt-hour (MWh) BESS confirms that the project will be located at PGE's Dolna Odra power plant in nearby Nowe Czarnowo. "The launch of the tender process for the construction of a new, large-scale battery energy storage facility in Gryfino, with a capacity of 400 MW and a capacity of 800 MWh, is another important step in implementing our storage strategy," PGE stated. "It aims to increase the total energy storage capacity of the PGE Group to 18.5 GWh by 2035. We are a leader in this area, currently accounting for 90% of the installed capacity of pumped-storage hydropower plants in Poland."

In March this year, PGE announced ambitious plans to invest US$4.7 billion to add 10 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of storage in the coming decade. This will involve a total of 80 projects, it said, spearheaded by the 262 MW/981 MWh Żarnowiec BESS project announced earlier this year, located near Poland's largest pumped-storage power plant, Żarnowiec. The project received Poland's first promised electricity storage license and has secured a connection agreement with the national power system. Gryfino has also secured a similar license, assuming the project goes into operation before 2029. PGE controls almost 90% of Poland's pumped-storage power plants. LG Energy Solution Wrocław was awarded the contract and construction for the Żarnowiec BESS project which is scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2027. In April, Poland's government launched a US$1 billion subsidy scheme, funded by the European Union's (EU's) Modernization Fund, that will be allocated by the end of this year in an effort to add more than 5 GWh of energy storage projects by 2028. Eligible storage projects will have a power rating of not less than 2 MW and a capacity of not less than 4 MWh connected to the grid at medium or high voltage. "The construction of energy storage facilities is essential for the stabilization of the power system and more efficient use of the growing production of energy from renewable sources," said Józef Matysiak, deputy president of the management board of the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management. "Support from the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management is a huge opportunity for entrepreneurs who want to actively participate in the energy transformation while building the country's energy security."
