Portland General Electric Begins Construction of $295 Million Expansion Project at Biglow Canyon

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Portland General Electric Company (NYSE:POR) (Portland, Oregon), has begun construction of its $295 million, 175-megawatt (MW) expansion project located at the Biglow Canyon Wind Energy Project. The expansion is the third project to be built at the Biglow facility.

Construction of the project began earlier this month and is scheduled to be ready for full commercial operation in the spring of 2010. The project will consist of installing an additional 76 2.3-MW Siemens Power Generation SWT-2.3-93 model wind turbine generators to the existing facility. The project currently produces about 125 MW of renewable energy. The second expansion at the site is scheduled to come online this fall and will generate up to150 MW. Once operational, Biglow Canyon is expected to be one of the largest windfarms built in the Pacific Northwest with a combined nameplate capacity of 450 MW.

D. H. Blattner & Sons Incorporated (Avon, Minnesota) will provide the turnkey engineering, procurement, and construction services for the duration of both phases of expansion at the site.
