Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Projected capital spending for the pipeline sector in Western Canada soars to approximately $38 billion. The proposed capital spending being tracked by Industrial Info is spread over 67 projects. The projects include natural gas, condensate, diluted bitumen, crude and synthetic crude pipelines. Other facilities being tracked include natural gas compressor stations and oil pump stations that support pipelines. The proposed facilities with be constructed in Alberta, British Columbia, Northwest Territories, and Yukon Territory.
Alberta has the highest amount of proposed spending with $12.678 billion being planned. British Columbia is in a close second with $12.223 billion in proposed spending. The Northwest Territories and the Yukon Territory have proposed project spending of $7.420 billion and $6.135 billion respectively. The proposed pipeline projects in Alberta will mainly be diluted bitumen pipeline transporting bitumen from the many proposed oil sands facilities currently under construction and being proposed in the Fort McMurray area to operational and proposed upgrading facilities located in lower Alberta. Also of interest are several synthetic crude oil pipeline export schemes to move the product from Alberta to the United States and to the Pacific Coast in British Columbia.
The proposed spending for the Yukon Territory and Northwest Territories mostly center on natural gas pipeline proposals. In the Northwest Territories the focus is mainly on bringing natural gas and NGLs from the Mackenzie Delta region and the Alaskan over the top natural gas pipeline route into pipeline interconnections in Northern Alberta. The proposed pipeline spending in British Columbia is divided between natural gas, condensate import and synthetic crude oil pipeline development proposals. The proposed Alaskan Highway natural pipeline route would cut across British Columbia into either Alberta or into the Pacific Coast region of the United States. The condensate pipeline proposals would originate on the Pacific Coast of British Columbia and terminate in Alberta to supply the oil sands developments with diluent for the diluted bitumen pipelines. Paralleling this condensate pipeline and flowing in the opposite direction would be synthetic crude oil pipeline to transport the synthetic crude oil from the production areas of Alberta to terminals in British Columbia for export to Pacific Rim markets and possibly the West Coast of California.
