Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--State-owned Qatar Petroleum (Doha, Qatar) is gearing up to build the US$11 billion Al Shaheen Refinery in Messaieed Industrial City, which is 40 kilometers south of Doha, on the east coast of Qatar. It is Qatar's largest industrial city and provides facilities for light to heavy industries.
Qatar Petroleum is responsible for all oil and gas industries in Qatar and operates as the world's third-largest petroleum company by oil and gas reserves. Company officials mentioned that the Al Shaheen Refinery is part of Quatar Petroleum's plan to increase crude oil production to 1 million barrels per day (BBL/d).
Construction of offsite utilities is scheduled to begin during the first quarter of 2012, along with the rest of the refinery. Offsite utilities will include protection systems, controllers and indicators, a substation, electric utilities, etc. to provide support for the refinery. Qatar Petroleum is investing US$3 billion in the Al Shaheen Refinery utilities sector and plans to complete construction sometime in 2015.
At the same time, construction of a hydrocracker unit addition will begin as well. The US$300 million addition, scheduled for completion with the rest of the refinery, will handle 30,000 to 50,000 barrels of crude per day and convert low-value oil residue into valuable products. Qatar Petroleum is also investing US$800 million into a continuous catalytic reformer unit, which will consist of two 25,000-BBL/d reformers that will convert low-octane naphtha into a high octane reformate for gasoline blending.
Another project included in the construction of the refinery involves the construction of a pipeline system to transport a feedstock supply of crude oil from offshore and onshore sources. Onshore feedstock will be supplied by the Al Shaheen oil fields, which are 180 kilometers north of Doha.
