Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland) -- German turbine maker, REpower Systems AG (ETR:RPW) (Hamburg, Germany), has secured a contract to supply 54 turbines for one of the largest planned windfarms in the German North Sea.
The contract has been confirmed with German energy giant RWE AG (OTC:RWEOY) (Essen, Germany) for the Innogy Nordsee 1 windfarm, located around 30 kilometres north of the island of Helgoland. The windfarm will RWE's first German offshore project. The deal comes just weeks after RWE announced that it was postponing the project due to uncertainty over ongoing grid connection issues with the government. For additional information, see July 31, 2012, article - RWE Delays Nordsee Offshore Project. When completed, Innogy Nordsee 1 will be capable of providing enough electricity for around 324,000 homes.
REpower will supply 54 of its model 6M turbines, each with a rated capacity of 6.15 megawatts (MW) each, to provide a total of 332 MW for the first phase of RWE's three planned Nordsee offshore projects. Nordsee 2 will boast 48 turbines and Nordsee 3 60 turbines, while all three windfarms combined -- if completed - will be capable of generating approximately 1,000 MW. The 6M is the largest offshore turbine currently in commercial operation.
"This contract is an important signal for the German offshore wind industry," said Andreas Nauen, CEO of REpower Systems. "We are delighted that RWE Innogy, our customer for many years, confides again in REpower´s established technology."
In March, Belgium became the first home to the 6M turbine when the first of 48 was installed at the Thornton Bank windfarm, located approximately 30 kilometres off the port of Ostend. The turbines, which will comprise Phases II and III of the windfarm, will have a combined generating capacity of 295 MW. RWE is pushing forward more windfarm projects in the U.K. than it is in Germany. Earlier this week, the first turbine foundations were installed at the massive 576 MW Gwynt y Môr project, off the north coast of Wales. It will boast 160 turbines and take two years to complete.
