Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Johannesburg, South Africa) -- Another major contract has been awarded for the Yanbu III Power and Desalination project being built by Saline Water Conversion Corporation (Riyadh, Saudi Arabia) on the Red sea coast in western Saudi Arabia. Alstom (OTC:ALSMY) (Paris, France) was awarded a $972 million contract consisting of the basic engineering in the power block, advisory services during detailed engineering and procurement, supervision services during construction and commissioning and delivery of the main equipment for five 620-megawatt (MW) units including the steam turbines and generators. The contract will also cover two heavy fuel oil (HFO) supercritical boilers, electrostatic precipitators and the flue gas desulfurization (FGD) system.
The contract was awarded by Al-Toukhi company (Riyadh) which is leading the consortium in charge of EPC (engineering+procurement+construction) of the HFO thermal plant.

The 3,100 MW plant will feed 2,700 MW to the grid in the region where Jeddah, Yanbu, Makkah and Madinah are located. The balance of power and steam produced will feed the new Yanbu 550,000 cubic meters a day (m3/d) desalination plant which will be a key supplier of potable water to the city of Madinah.
The plant which is being developed for the Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC) will be one of Saudi Arabia's first supercritical power plants to run on HFO.
