Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Seadrift Coke LP (Port Lavaca, Texas) is moving forward with plans to spend more than $70 million on a sulfur reduction project at its 180,000-ton-per-year needle coking facility. The implementation of this project will allow the purchase of lower-cost, high-sulfur feedstock, reducing feedstock costs and the final sulfur content of its coke. Industrial Info has been tracking the development of these plans since their inception in 1999.
The installation of this unit will come on the heels of a $25 million plant expansion that, when completed in 2010, will increase the capacity of the plant to 252,000 tons per year.
Seadrift Coke is the world's second largest producer of needle coke and operates the world's only stand-alone needle coking facility. The plant, which has 100 employees, began operations in 1983.
