Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Shell Nederland Raffinaderji BV, a subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell plc (NYSE:RDS.A) (The Hague, Netherlands), is still in the midst of maintenance repairs on the 54,000-barrel-per-day (BBL/d) fluid catalytic cracker unit (FCCU) at its Pernis refinery in Rotterdam. The FCCU has been offline since last October due to technical problems, which has expedited turnarounds and capital work that originally was scheduled to take place beginning this month.
Shell is also performing an upgrade on the FCCU. The $64 million upgrade will allow Pernis refinery to comply with clean fuel project requirements and safety regulations. Shell expects the FCCU to be running again by mid-March.
Expedited work on the FCCU has accelerated maintenance schedules and capital work due on the 208,000-BBL/d Crude Distillation Unit 6, as well at the Vacuum Unit 5. Upgrades and turnarounds on both of these units are taking place, several weeks ahead of their original March start dates. Shell is expecting nearly $97 million in total costs for both units, which are expected to begin running again at the same time as the FCCU.
Late next year, Shell plans to begin the construction of a carbon capture and storage facility near the Pernis refinery. The $900 million facility, which is scheduled for completion in 2015, is expected to capture and store at least 400,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually, totaling 30 million tons by 2030. Shell is anticipating a 30% reduction in emissions.
