Small Canadian Green Energy Company Continues Steady Growth

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Canadian Gas & Electric Company Limited, a division of Canadian Hydro Developers, Incorporated (TSE: KHD) (Calgary, Alberta) has started construction of their EcoPower Centre a 25-megawatt (MW) biomass cogeneration power plant (Plant 1052389, PEC 56000446) in Grande Prairie, Alberta. This follows the start up of the joint venture of Canadian Hydro and Brascan Power (Sault Sainte Marie, Ontario) 30MW phase I of Pingston Creek Hydroelectric Power plant (PLANT 1028718, PEC 57000105) (Revelstoke, British Columbia) last May. The third 15MW unit at Pingston Creek (PEC 57000419) is scheduled for operation in the spring of 2004. There is a third project that is also in British Columbia that is just waiting on final provincial approval to start construction the 25MW Upper Mamquam Hydroelectric Power plant in (PLANT 1019436, PEC 57000020) Squamish, British Columbia. The last project is also a joint venture with a Sault Sainte Marie company, Great Lakes Power Company Limited.

The EcoPower Centre will utilize wood from local sawmill. The electricity will go to the sawmill, local grid and district heating with the steam only going to sawmill and district heating. Construction of the plant started in September and is scheduled for operation in the fourth quarter of 2004. EcoPower will burn 220,000 tons per year of waste wood in two Nebraska Boilers that will provide steam for a Shin/Nippon turbine, which drives an ABB generator.

Brothers John and Ross Keating plus geologist Jack McCleary formed Canadian Hydro Developers in 1980's as a company devoted to providing environmentally friendly or green power to the grid. The first plant was a 3MW low impact hydroelectric facility. Canadian Hydro Developers now have a small natural gas cogeneration plant, ten hydroelectric plants and three wind farms from which they have capabilities to produce up to 104MW and plans to expand up to 300MW by 2006.
