Supplier Selected for $53 Million Boiler Addition in Indiana

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Sumitomo Heavy Industries (Allentown, Pennsylvania) was selected to provide design and supply services for a $53 million boiler addition for Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Design services are under way for installation of one Sumitomo 250,000-pound-per-hour (lbs/hr), 625-psi clean-coal technology circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler to be added that will replace the existing 49-year-old boiler No. 1 at the Wade Utility Plant. The plant currently contains two 215,000-lbs/hr Stoker boilers, one dual-fueled natural gas and No. 2 fuel oil boiler at 215,000 lbs/hr, and one CFB 200,000-lbs/hr boiler. The new boiler will be housed in a 2,000- to 3,000-square-foot building enclosure. A general contractor will be selected in March of this year with construction anticipated to begin in the fall of 2010. Overall completion is slated for the summer of 2013.

At the Wade Utility Plant, Indiana coal is the prime fuel source. Steam is produced by the combustion of coal, natural gas, and fuel oil in two Spreader-Stoker boilers with 215,000 lbs/hr capacity installed in 1961 and 1967, one gas/oil package boiler with a capacity of 215,000 lbs/hr installed in 1973, and one circulating fluidized bed boiler with a capacity of 200,000 lbs/hr installed in 1991. The Wade Utility Plant produces electricity using two steam turbine generators and one diesel engine-driven generator established in 1967, 1995 and 1999.
