Synergy Biofuels Expects to Produce First Test Batch of Biodiesel This Week at New Virginia Plant

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Biodiesel start-up Synergy Biofuels LLC (Pennington Gap, Virginia) is expecting to produce its first test batch of biodiesel this week in anticipation of beginning commercial operation during the last week of September. Once the batch is tested and fuel production is ASTM certified, full-scale operation will begin.

Construction of the plant began in March 2008, and the production equipment will process used vegetable oils into 3 million gallons per year of biodiesel. Biodiesel will be produced with blends of B-5 (5% biodiesel mixed with petroleum diesel) to B-95 (95% biodiesel) blends. The company plans to collect waste grease from the prison just across the street and grease from schools and restaurants within a 100-mile radius from the plant.

The plant is located in the former Super Sack building along state route 630 in Lee County in the southwest corner of Virginia, about 180 miles southeast of Louisville. Once fully operational, the estimated $1 million plant will create 30 new jobs for the rural community.

Once in operation, Synergy will become the fourth biodiesel plant operating in Virginia. Reco Biodiesel operates a 10 million gallon per year plant in Richmond; Renroh Environmental operates a small 1 million gallon per year plant in New Boston, and Virginia BioDiesel produces 2 million gallons per year at a plant in West Point.
