Released Thursday, March 26, 2009

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) (Knoxville, Tennessee) currently has six nuclear operating units -- three in Alabama and three in Tennessee -- with a total capacity of about 6,700-megawatts (MW). The units in Alabama are all at the Browns Ferry Nuclear Station (Decatur, Alabama) and have a capacity of approximately 3,300 MW. The Alabama units all utilize General Electric (NYSE:GE) (Fairfield, Connecticut) boiling water reactors and steam turbine/generators. The three units in Tennessee are located at two plants: two of the units are located at the 2,270-MW Sequoyah Nuclear Station (Soddy Daisy), and the other is at the 1,120-MW Watts Bar Nuclear Station (Spring City). The Tennessee units are pressurized water reactors by Westinghouse Nuclear Services (Monroeville, Pennsylvania), a division of Toshiba Corporation (TYO:6502) (Tokyo, Japan), that drives a steam turbine/generator by Siemens Power Generation (Orlando, Florida), a subsidiary of Siemens AG (NYSE:SI) (Munich, Germany).

TVA has three partially completed units -- one in Tennessee and two in Alabama. Watts Bar Unit 2 is currently about 80% complete and resumed construction in October 2007. The unit is expected to be online before 2013 and is a pressurized water reactor with a Siemens steam turbine. The two units in Alabama are at the Bellefonte Nuclear Station (Hollywood, Alabama). Unit 1 is 97% complete, and Unit 2 is 50% complete. The units use reactors manufactured by Babcock and Wilcox Nuclear Power Generation Group Incorporated (Lynchburg, Virginia), a subsidiary of McDermott International Incorporated (NYSE:MDR) (Houston, Texas). The reactors will provide steam to drive two Brown Boveri, now ABB Limited (NYSE:ABB) (Zurich, Switzerland), steam turbine/generator sets.

Units 3 and 4 at Bellefonte are being developed with assistance from Enercon Services Incorporated (Tulsa, Oklahoma) and NuStart Energy Development (Kennett Square, Pennsylvania) and will use the new Westinghouse AP1000 reactor to drive two 1,154-MW steam turbine sets.
