Third Largest U.S. Wind Energy Plant Under Construction

Last month construction was started on the third largest wind producing electrical generating plant in the country. FPL Energy, a subsidiary of FPL Group (NYSE: FPL) (Juno Beach, Florida) is constructing a 204 MW generation plant, located seven miles west of House, New Mexico.

The New Mexico Wind Energy Center will consist of 136 wind turbines spread between Quay and De Baca counties. Electricity from the center will be sold to Public Service Company of New Mexico and to the wholesale power market in the Southwest. Construction of the $180 million facility will be completed by the end of July 2003.

Alliant Energy Resources, Inc (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) is providing engineering services, while Wind Energy Constructors, LLC (Mojave, California) was awarded a contract for plant construction.
