Researched by Industrial Info Resources Australia (Perth, Australia)--Tronox Pty Limited (Perth, Western Australia) is proposing to develop the Cooljarloo West Mineral Sands Mine and Processing Plant. Tronox is currently at work on the project's pre-feasibility study. The final outcome of the pre-feasibility study is expected by the end of 2014, and the feasibility study is scheduled to begin by the first quarter of 2015.
The Cooljarloo West Mineral Sands Project is about 108 miles (175 kilometers) north of Perth and 3 miles (6 kilometers) west of the existing Tronox Cooljarloo Mine. The project development will largely utilize the existing Cooljarloo Mine facilities. Tronox plans to construct a water channel to float the 750 tonne-per-hour concentrator plant from the existing Cooljarloo Mine to the Cooljarloo West Mineral Sands deposit. The water channel would be about 3 miles (6 kilometers) long and 109 yards (100 meters) wide.
The project development also would require excavating three open-cut mineral sands mines--Kestrel, Harrier and Woolka--by dredging. According to estimates from the company's environmental approvals manager, the Cooljarloo West Mineral Sands Mine would have a viable lifespan of about six years. When the resources at Cooljarloo West are exhausted, the dredge and concentrator plant would return to the existing Cooljarloo Mine. The construction of the water channel is scheduled to begin during the second half of 2015, and early earth work for the mine deposit is expected to commence in the first quarter of 2016.
As part of the project's development, supporting infrastructure corridors such as haul roads, pipelines and power lines are required. Construction of temporary topsoil and temporary overburden stockpiles and tailings facilities are required as well.
Tronox Pty Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of Tronox Limited (NYSE:TROX) (Stamford, Connecticut). Tronox Pty Limited has operated in Western Australia since 2011. Several mineral sands mines and processing plants in Western Australia, such as Cooljarloo mining, Chandala processing plant and Kwinana processing plant, are operated by the subsidiary. Tronox Pty Limited operations in Western Australia also include product-handling and shipping facilities at Henderson and Bunbury Port.
