TXU Investing Millions on Environmental Upgrades at Coal-Fired Plants

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). TXU Power, Incorporated (Dallas, Texas) the largest producer of electricity in Texas and a subsidiary of TXU Corporation, is planning on investing $210 million on an environmental retrofit project to reduce emissions at the Martin Lake Power Station (Tatum, Texas) over the next three years.

Named after the lake that provides the plant’s cooling water, the Martin Lake facility is a three-unit lignite coal electric generating plant located in Rusk County, about 200 miles north of Houston. The plant includes three 793-megawatt (MW) Siemens Westinghouse turbine/generator sets with three Alstom Combustion Engineering tangential-fired dry bottom boilers. All units became operational between 1977 and 1979.

TXU plans to install a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system on each unit to reduce nitrogen dioxide (NOx) emissions. Construction is scheduled to start in the first quarter of 2008, with completion on all units by 2010.

Fluor Corporation (Greenville, South Carolina) was selected to provide engineering, procurement and construction (E+P+C) services throughout the whole process.

TXU Power is also performing preliminary design work to upgrade an existing wet flue gas desulfurization (FGD) scrubber at the 1,980 MW coal-fired Monticello Power Station (Mount Pleasant, Texas) to continue the reduction of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and will refurbish the limestone handling system and sprayers. The project is scheduled to kick off in the spring of 2008. NOx control is still being studied and not considered until 2010 or after.
