UC San Francisco a Heartbeat Away from Completing $254 Million Cardiovascular Research Institute

Reported by Annette Kreuger, Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The end of construction is in sight for the University of California San Francisco's (UCSF) $254 million Cardiovascular Research Institute (CVRI). Located on the Mission Bay campus, the CVRI will focus on the prevention and treatment of heart attacks, strokes and other cardiovascular diseases. It is a vital mission, as these diseases are the leading cause of death and disability in the United States, accounting for nearly 1 million deaths each year--a number expected to increase along with the age of the population.

CVRI's new home embraces today's trend to expedite research by bringing together the scientists and doctors who treat patients. Designed by the SmithGroup (San Francisco, California), working with Jim Jennings Architecture (San Francisco), the five-story, 230,000-square-foot, L-shaped building will feature three floors of flexible lab space and office clusters, along with an outpatient clinic for treatment. It will also be the home to a new UCSF center for the prevention of cardiovascular disease.

Construction manager Rudolph & Sletten (Redwood City, California) began work on the project in 2008.Upon completion of the building later this year, UCSF will seek LEED Gold certification for the building. LEED features include an Energy Star reflective roof, diversion of 75% of construction waste, and the use of recycled materials.
