Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). The University of Oklahoma (Norman, Oklahoma) is planning to construct a new central plant on its existing campus in Norman, Oklahoma. Plans include the construction of a new central plant, as well as the installation of three 2,000- ton chillers, three 75,000-100,000 lbs/hr boilers, and other auxiliary equipment, in order to increase the University’s steam and chilled water supply for new campus buildings.

Upon capital approval, an engineering firm will be selected in the late summer of 2006 to provide design services. A general contractor will be selected in the spring of 2007 for construction of the building. Building construction is anticipated to begin in the late spring of 2007, and overall completion is anticipated for the spring of 2008.

The University’s utility system generates power, steam, chilled water, potable (drinking-quality) and nonpotable water and distributes these services along with natural gas. The power plant makes electricity, chilled water, steam and potable water. It has the capacity to produce roughly 300,000 pounds of steam, 16.5 Megawatts of electricity, 16,000 air conditioning tons of cooling and 1,320 gallons of potable water every hour.

The University of Oklahoma was created in 1890 by the Oklahoma Territorial Legislature as a doctoral degree-granting research university serving the educational, cultural, economic and health care needs of the state, region and nation. The University enrolls over 31,000 students, more than 2,000 full-time faculty members and nineteen colleges offering 147 majors at the baccalaureate level, 152 majors at the first professional level, 80 majors at the doctoral level, and 35 majors at the first professional level. The University’s operating budget is currently estimated at over $1 billion.
