A $30 million modernization at an oriented strand board (OSB) mill in Georgia will be the largest capital project in the forest products industry to enter the construction phase during the fourth quarter of 2004. Research by Industrialinfo.com Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas) indicates that twelve projects, ranging in value from $1 million up to $30 million, and with a combined value of $99.2 million, will get underway between October and December. According to Randy Godet, Pulp and Paper Group Manager, at Industrialinfo.com, "It is typical of the fourth quarter to have fewer projects kicking off, primarily because most mills are wrapping up earlier fiscal year budget projects at that time, and are developing projects and preparing budgets for the following year."
Among those twelve projects, capital expenditures in plants that produce wood products, including lumber and panels, number around $57 million. Paper and paperboard producers plan to spend around $40 million, including a $10 million boiler project. In early 2001, Industrialinfo.com reported the development of a $21 million project at a mill in Louisiana that involved replacing two brownstock washing lines. Construction on that project will start in December and is expected to be complete by the fall of 2005.
