Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is tracking $2.67 billion in Industrial Manufacturing projects that are planned to kick off in second-quarter 2020 in the U.S. Northeast market region, which includes Delaware, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. Thanks to a large airport project, the transportation systems sector leads in terms of project value, followed by the distribution and warehousing sector.

Among the largest projects planned to kick off in the region is a terminal modernization at the Pittsburgh International Airport in Pennsylvania. Land-based terminal functions will be relocated to a new 632,000-square-foot facility that will be built adjacent to the airside terminal. Work will occur on 46 airline gates with boarding bridges and five swing gates for overnight aircraft. Other aspects such an improved baggage handling system also will be implemented. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2023. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Microgrid projects are quite prominent in the area, and the Pittsburgh airport is no exception. A 22.5-megawatt (MW) solar microgrid will built on the airport grounds, using more than 7,800 solar panels. The project also will house five natural gas-fired generators with a capacity of 20 MW and a battery energy storage system to provide power to the airport's existing terminals as well as the one that will be built. The project is expected to be completed in the summer of 2021. LLI Engineering (Pittsburgh) is the design engineer. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Other microgrid projects include rooftop solar arrays at the city courthouse and sewage and wastewater treatment facilities in Buffalo, New York. The projects are part of a larger scheme in Buffalo to provide solar power to seven city-owned locations totaling 10 to 15 MW of capacity. The courthouse array will generate 1 MW, and the water treatment plant will generate 2.5 MW. The projects are expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2021. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the courthouse and water treatment facility arrays. A larger, 50-MW solar array also is planned for the city's University at Buffalo campus. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington) is stepping up its game in the region with no less than three planned fulfillment and distribution centers planned to kick off in New York. The largest of these is planned for Clay, New York, on the outskirts of Syracuse. The 3.8 million-square-foot distribution center will include four floors. As technology advances, so does the need for newer components, and ON Semiconductor Corporation (Phoenix, Arizona) is making this happen with the renovation and expansion of its existing semiconductor plant in Hopewell Junction, New York, to establish the company's first 300-millimeter chip manufacturing facility. The $290 million project is expected to be completed in late 2022. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Projects at ports also feature in the region's upcoming project activity. The South Jersey Port Corporation (Camden, New Jersey) will begin a phase II expansion at its marine terminal in Paulsboro, New Jersey. The project will add a third 40-foot-deep berth and a 20-foot-deep barge berth, as well as a warehouse addition to increase the facility's cargo handling capabilities. The project is expected to be completed in the summer of 2021. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
