Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--This week, the government of Venezuela, through the Corporacion Venezolana Agraria (CVA), has started the reactivation of the Central Azucarero Cariaco sugar plant, which is expected to resume refining within the next 90 days.
After evaluating the facilities for more than five months, the government approved the budget to carry out the needed repairs for the plant to become operational and refine imported raw sugar before 2010. The evaluation showed a general deterioration, and mandatory repairs will take place in the vapour and electricity generation areas. Other mends, such as assembling existing equipment in the milling, could be performed after the refining process begins.
The plant is also expected to start crushing sugar cane supplied by local growers by next January. The objective of Central Cariaco's restoration is to reach a cane-crushing capacity of 2,000 tons per day. However, given the poor conditions of the soil after irregular harvest, it is already known that the first safra will not be highly productive. Actions to rectify this situation are being held by the growers with government aid.
Central Azucarero Cariaco is in Carupano, in the state of Sucre. The facility was built in 1978 and operated as a state factory until privatization in the mid-1980s. In March 2009, the Venezuelan government took control of the mill. Currently, the Venezuelan Agrarian Corporation (CVA) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Land are responsible for the administration and operation of the plant.
