Zhejiang Energy Group Starts Up First of Three 200-Megawatt Hydropower Units in Eastern China

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The first 200-megawatt (MW) unit of the 600 MW Tankeng Hydropower Plant was put into commercial operation in eastern China's Zhejiang province, Zhejiang Energy Group Company Limited (Hangzhou) announced on August 18. The unit currently is one of the largest single-capacity hydropower units in the region.

The plant, located on the Oujiang River in the Lishui prefecture, is being built by Beihai Hydropower Generation Company Limited (Hangzhou), a subsidiary of the Zhejiang Energy Group. Beihai Hydropower will also be responsible for the project's operation. The plant will include a 162-meter tall dam, the tallest in eastern China, with a crest elevation at 171 meters above sea level. The reservoir will have a normal storage level of 160 meters with a total storage capacity of 4.15 billion cubic meters.

The plant will provide the region with power, as well as benefits in flood control and diversified businesses. In all, the station will have three 200-MW Francis turbine generating units and an annual average power output of about 1.02 billion kilowatt-hours. According to the National Development and Reform Commission, the total investment for the project will be $684 million.

Upon completion, the project could save about 340,000 metric tons of standard coal compared to a thermal power plant. The project could help to accelerate the exploitation and utilization of small- and medium-scale hydropower resources in the region.
