Samsung to Double Size of Austin Semiconductor Plant

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Samsung Austin Semiconductor LLC (Austin, Texas), a subsidiary Samsung Electronics Company Limited (SEO:005935) (Seoul, South Korea), plans to expand the capacity of the company's manufacturing facility in Austin, Texas, with a $3.6 billion investment that doubles the size of company's current facility.

Unlike the rest of Samsung's operations in Austin, the new facility will not be making memory chips, but will produce complex, low-power "systems on a chip" that are expected to be used in future generations of smart phones, tablet computers and other mobile devices.

The new investment in the Austin campus will build out the second phase of the company's 2.3-million-square-foot semiconductor complex. Construction on the first half of the building was started in 2006, and production began a year later.The expansion will consist of retrofitting a three-story building. Each floor is approximately 500,000 square feet. Construction of a 115,000-square-foot class-1 clean room will be part of the project.

Samsung Texas Construction Incorporated will manage the construction of the project and will hire subcontractors as needed. The Phase II project is estimated to be completed by summer of 2011.

The new expansion will add 500 permanent full-time employees to Samsung's payroll in Austin. The construction on the new facility should employ an additional 3,000 people in construction and vending positions.
