Design Has Begun for Largest Thermal Power Project in Yunnan

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas) -- Preliminary design for the first phase of the Zhenxiong Power Plant passed the pre-examination organized by the Electric Power Planning & Engineering Institute recently in Kunming, the capital city of Southwest China’s Yunnan Province. Design of the construction drawings has started. Construction of the project is expected to start in November 2007.

The Zhenxiong Power Plant is located at Tangfang Town, Zhenxiong County, Yunnan Province. The plans are to build four 600-megawatt (MW) units in two phases. Two 600 MW supercritical coal-fired units will be built in Phase I. As an important project of Yunnan Province in 2007, the project will be the largest thermal power plant, and the first supercritical coal-fired unit ever built in Yunnan Province, as well as the first supercritical boiler with a “W” shaped flame in the world. The project will be adopted with many new methods and concepts in its design that is targeted on the saving of land, water, material and energy in accordance with the requirements in environmental protection and in soil and water conservations.

The Zhenxiong Power Plant will be built and operated by Yunnan Huadian Zhenxiong Power Generation Company, Limited, a company jointly established by China Huadian Corporation (Beijing, China) (62%), Yunnan Development Investment Company, Limited (Lunming, China) (35%) and Yunnan Dongyuan Coal Mining Group Company, Limited (Yunnan, China) (3%).

As an important power source for the mutual compensation between hydropower and thermal power in the implementing of the strategy of “transmitting power from the west to the east” in China, the project has very important meaning in developing the rich coal resources in northeast Yunnan Province, optimizing the power sources structure and in promoting the local economic development.

According to a related report, the total coal reserve in Zhenxiong County reached 4.7 billion metric tons, and about 3.2 billion metric tons is an exploitable reserve. The coal reserve in the county is not only huge, widely distributed, and easy to exploit, but also of excellent anthracite with high heat productivity, medium or low ash and sulfur content.
