Swiss Company to Refurbish Three Hydropower Stations

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Swiss energy company Kraftwerke Hinterrhein AG (Thusis, Switzerland) recently announced plans to modernize three of the company's hydropower stations. The cost of refurbishing the nearly 50-year-old utilities is about 130 million euros ($196 million).

Construction is scheduled to begin November 2011, with completion of the project set for May 2013. At the moment, the company is awaiting construction permits for the project.

The three plants are Baerenburg, Sils and Ferrera. The 220-megawatt (MW) Baerenburg Power Station, inaugurated in 1963, is equipped with four Francis vertical turbines. To change the turbine runners and install new stators for the generators, two storage lakes, Sufnersee and Baerenburgsee, must be emptied in the winter of 2011-12. The four Francis turbines of the 245-MW Sils Hydropower Station will be overhauled during the same period.

Sometime around November 2012, the company plans to refurbish the 185-MW Ferrera hydropower station, which has also been operational since 1963. To carry out the works at the turbine and generator, lakes Lei, Ferrera and Preda must be emptied and fish relocated. In all of the plants, electrical construction and control and communication systems will be modernized. Although capacity will not be increased, the plants will operate at much higher rates of efficiency.
