Korea East-West Power Plans Additions for Dangjin Power Station

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--In 2007, oil- and coal-based thermal power provided more than 60% of South Korea's electricity. According to Business Monitor International (London, England), South Korea's electricity is expected to account for nearly 5.5% of the Asia-Pacific region's power generation by 2014.

Despite environmental issues related to coal-fired power plants, South Korea is continuing with plans to construct and expand thermal power stations to raise the country's installed capacity to approximately 100 gigawatts by 2020.

The Dangjin coal-fired power station, located approximately 70 kilometers southwest of Seoul in the South Chungcheong province, currently produces 4,400 megawatts (MW) via seven units. The facility will begin the construction of additional units next June.

The Dangjin power station is owned by Korea East-West Power Corporation (KEWP), part of Korea Electric Power Corporation (NYSE:KEP) (Seoul, South Korea), which has formed an alliance with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Limited (TYO:7011) (MHI) (Tokyo, Japan) and Babcock-Hitachi KK (BHK) (Tokyo), an affiliate of Hitachi Limited (NYSE:HIT) (Tokyo) to construct and install units 9 and 10.

In July, BHK was selected by KEWP to provide two sets of supercritical boilers. This will be BHK's first time to provide this type of boiler equipment and construction service in Korea. The new supercritical circulating fluidized bed boilers use Hitachi technology and are more suitable for compliance with the Kyoto Protocol by strictly control carbon dioxide emissions.

MHI will provide two condensing-type turbine-generator sets that will be driven by superheated steam generated by the boilers. Each turbine-generator set will produce 1,000 MW. When the $5 billion units are completed mid-2016, the Dangjin power station will provide the local grid with an additional 2,000 MW of power, for a grand total of 6,400 MW of installed capacity.
