Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The feasibility study of China Huaneng Group's (Beijing) 1,800-megawatt (MW) Longkaikou hydropower station passed the examination of an expert panel jointly organized by the Hydropower and Water Resources Planning & Design General Institute, which is a subsidiary of HydroChina Corporation (Beijing), and the Development and Reform Commission of Yunnan province on September 13, 2010.
During the examination meeting, the feasibility study report prepared by HydroChina Huadong Engineering Corporation was reviewed and discussed in detail. The expert panel concluded that the report was satisfactory in content and depth, and approved the report in principle. The expert panel also offered comments for further improvement of the report prior to submission to the National Development and Reform Commission for final approval.
The proposed Longkaikou hydropower station, located in Heqing County in southwest China's Yunnan province, is the sixth step in the Cascade Development Scheme for the Middle Reaches of the Jinsha River, which connects Jin'anqiao hydropower station upstream and Ludila hydropower station downstream.
According to the feasibility study report, the project involves a reservoir with a total storage capacity of 558 million cubic meters under the normal pool level of 1,298 meters above sea level. The project is being built primarily for power generation, but will provide irrigation and water supply, as well.
The power station plans to build four 360-megawatt (MW) units, providing a total installed capacity of 1,800 MW and an annual output of about 7.4 billion kilowatt-hours. The project is mainly comprised of a 119-meter-high rolling compaction concrete gravity dam, dam-section flood-charge facilities and a surface powerhouse behind the dam.
In early 2002, China Huaneng Group kicked off the pre-stage preparation for the project. Site preparation officially kicked off in the middle of 2008. The construction was suspended by the Ministry of Environmental Protection, as the EIA report had not been approved.
The owner, Huaneng Longkaikou Hydropower Company Limited (Kunming, Yunnan), is working with HydroChina Huadong Engineering Corporation to have the feasibility study and project application approved.
