Phase II, 2,000-Megawatt Project at Guohua Taishan Power Plant Begins Full Operations

Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--Following the successful commissioning of the Unit 6 in March 2011, Unit 7 at Guohua Taishan Power Plant passed the 168-hour full-load trial operation and was put into commercial operations on November 24, 2011. This marks the completion of the plant's 2,000-megawatt (MW) Phase II expansion project.

Guohua Taishan Power Plant, which is at the Tonggu coastal area of Taishan City in South China's Guangdong province, is a key project listed in the 10th five-year plan (2001-05) plan, both for the state and Guangdong province. The plant has a total planned capacity of 9,000 MW that is to be built in phases, including five coal-fired units, each of 600 MW, and six other units, each of 1,000 MW.

The power plant was built and operated by Guangdong Guohua Yuedian Taishan Power Generation Company Limited (Taishan, Guangdong), a project company jointly invested by Guohua Power Company Limited (Beijing) (80%) and Guangdong Yudean Group Company Limited (Guangzhou, Guangdong) (20%) in 2001. Guangdong Electric Power Design Institute (Guangzhou, Guangdong) is responsible for the design and engineering of the plant.

Construction of the 3,000-MW Phase I began in October 2001 and was completed in 2007. Units 1 and 2 were commissioned in December 2003 and April 2004, respectively; units 3 and 4 were commissioned in January 2006; Unit 5 was commissioned in November 2006.

Construction of the Phase II expansion began in 2009. Following the completion of the units 6 and 7, the project owner is preparing for the construction units 8 and 9. When the project is fully completed, Guohua Taishan Power Plant will become the largest coal-fired power plant in China.
