Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Austin Energy, which is a utility for the city of Austin, Texas, has hired TRC Companies Incorporated (NYSE:TRR) (Lowell, Massachusetts) to dismantle and demolish the four-unit, 540-megawatt (MW) natural gas and oil-fired Holly Street Power Station in Austin. The station was closed between 2004 and 2007. Holly Street's first unit commenced commercial operations in 1960, and the last unit became operational in 1974.
The switchyard and substation will remain, but will be landscaped and fenced. The rest of the power station will be turned over to the city's parks department and will be called Holly Park.
The ceremonial kick-off for the $11.5 million project was on October 22, but the actual kick-off is December 12 and is scheduled to take 18 months. TRC will own the equipment and material and will be able to sell it to supplement its profits for the project.
According to Oscar Backus, Austin Energy's senior public relations officer and consulting engineer, it will be a five step process:
- Construct a temporary extension of Pedernales Street and add a parking lot, which will take one to four months.
- Abate asbestos and lead contaminates, which will take place during the fourth to ninth months.
- Structural dismantlement, salvaging and demolition, which will take place during the fourth to 16th months.
- Haul away materials, which will take place during the fourth to 16th months.
- Fifth is the restoration and the demobilization by TRC, which will take place during the 16th to 18th months.
