Researched by Industrial Info Resources Latin America (Cordoba, Argentina)--Eletrobras Eletronuclear (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), a subsidiary of Centrais Eletricas Brasileiras S.A. (NYSE:EBR) (Eletrobras) (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), resumed operations at the Almirante Álvaro Alberto Nuclear Power Station (Angra 1) on May 3 after performing the annual refueling and maintenance outage.
The 657-megawatt (MW) plant is in the Angra dos Reis region, in the state of Rio de Janeiro. It is equipped with a steam turbine and a pressurized water reactor, both manufactured by Westinghouse Electric Company (Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania).
The refueling shutdown began on March 29. Eletrobras Eletronuclear expected Angra 1 to be operating with full capacity by Thursday. The next refueling outage is planned for May 2015. In 1985, Angra was the first nuclear power station to start operations in Brazil.
This year's outage cost US$11 million and required national and international companies to support technicians at Eletrobras.
Together with the Angra 2 station, which is equipped with a 1,350-MW Siemens AG (NYSE:SI) (Munich, Germany) steam turbine and a pressurized reactor, Eletrobras Eletronuclear generates 3% of the power generation for Brazil.
