Abengoa Bioenergy Begins Construction on Ethanol Plant in Iowa

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Abengoa Bioenergy Corporation (Chesterfield, Missouri), a subsidiary of Spain's Abengoa, has begun construction of its commercial-scale biorefinery in Hugoton, Kansas. The $496 million project has been in the planning stages since 2007, but had to overcome various delays.

In August, 2011 Abengoa Bioenergy announced that the U.S. Department of Energy's Loan Programs Office selected it to receive an offer of a conditional commitment for a $133.9 million federal loan guarantee to help fund the project. Finally, the construction was able to begin after Kansas issued the PSD Air Quality Construction Permit last week.

When completed in 24 months, the $346 million plant will produce 23 million gallons annually of fuel-grade ethanol and have up to 65 full-time jobs. The biorefinery will utilize Abengoa Bioenergy's proprietary technology to produce renewable energy from source-fiber, or cellulosic biomass.

Abengoa is now accepting bids for its $150 million, 100-megawatt biomass cogeneration power plant that will be located alongside the ethanol plant. Construction is set to begin in the first quarter of 2012.

The project sits on a 385-acre site on Road 11 near Hugoton, Kansas, about 88 miles southwest of Dodge City, Kansas.

There are currently 11 operational fuel ethanol plants in Kansas, with another under construction.
