Ameren Announces $1 Billion of Environmental Upgrades Performed in Illinois in 2009

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Ameren Corporation (NYSE:AEE) (St. Louis, Missouri) recently announced the completion of $1 billion in environmental improvements at several coal-fired power plants in Illinois in 2009. Projects tracked by Industrial Info included the additions of flue gas desulfurization (FGD) scrubbers to address SO2 emissions, electrostatic precipitators (ESP) for removing particulates from flue gas, and activated carbon injection systems to reduce the presence of oxidized mercury released in the flue gases.

The power facilities involved were the 410-megawatt (MW) Duck Creek Power Station near Canton, the 900-MW Coffeen Power Station near Coffeen, the 464-MW Meredosia Power Plant near Jacksonville, the 1,198-MW Newton Power Plant in Jasper County, and the 1,002-MW Joppa Power Plant in Massac County.

At the Duck Creek Power Station, contractor Graycor Industrial Constructors Incorporated (Homewood, Illinois) has installed the Hitachi Power Systems wet FGD scrubber and an ESP for particulate controls on Unit 1, which is a Riley Stoker Corporation boiler.

At the Coffeen Power Station, contractor Alberici Corporation (St. Louis) will complete the installation of the second Hitachi Power Systems wet FGD scrubber in March on the plant's Babcock & Wilcox boilers.

Activated carbon injection systems were also completed at the E.D. Edwards Power Plant, the Newton Power Plant, the Meredosia Power Plant and the Joppa Power Plant last year.

Currently, IIR is tracking $1.6 billion of emission control projects at power plants in Illinois that are scheduled to start construction in 2010 and beyond.
