Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Bayonne Energy Center LLC (BEC), a joint venture between Hess Corporation (NYSE:HES) (New York, New York) and ArcLight Capital Partners LLC (Boston, Massachusetts), is moving forward with the completion of the Bayonne Energy Center located in Bayonne, New Jersey.
Massachusetts-based Pure Energy Resources LLC was the project developer. Barton Malow Construction (Canonsburg, Pennsylvania) began site preparation and eventually construction on this facility in the spring of 2010.
There were many milestones lining the path for the BEC. One in particular was the distribution and delivery of the electricity generated at the facility. The power will be delivered to the Gowanus Substation in Brooklyn, New York. The substation will be fed by three 345-kilovolt (kV) AC, single-core, submarine XLPE cables. The cables were buried 15 feet under the New York Harbor, and are considered to be among the deepest power cables ever buried. These three cables were designed and manufactured to extend continuously without any joint connections. The cables were 6.5 miles long, with a 602 MVA power rating, and were installed by ABB Limited (NYSE:ABB) (Zurich, Switzerland).
ABB manufactured the cables at their facility in Sweden. The BEC cable system has been identified as the world's longest continuous 345-kV, AC submarine XLPE cable systems. The cables were energized late 2011.
As the construction trailers are beginning to be removed and permanent communication lines are being installed, BEC is starting the wrap up loose ends to begin commercial operations. Performance testing is winding down and all the equipment is up and running. There were issues with the natural gas line, but those problems have been corrected. Commercial operation is anticipated to start before the end of the second quarter.
