Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--The environmental impact assessment (EIA) report prepared by prepared the Guodian Environment Protection Research Institute (Nanjing, Jiangsu) for Jiangsu Huadian Yangzhou Power Generation Company Limited's (Yangzhou, Jiangsu) 930-megawatt (MW), gas-fired, combined-cycle expansion project at the Yangzhou Power Plant was accepted by the Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP) on April 19, 2013, according to an announcement by the MEP on April 22.
The Huadian Yangzhou Power Plant, located in the northeastern suburbs of Yangzhou City, was built in 1958 with three 12-MW, coal-fired units built in Phase I and Phase II (shut down in 1992 and 1993, respectively); two 220-MW coal-fired units (Units 4 & 5) built in Phase III (shut down in October 2008 and February 2010, respectively); and two 330-MW, coal-fired units (Units 6 & 7) built in Phase IV (commissioned in May and August 2005, respectively). The power plant is now a subsidiary of China Huadian Corporation (Beijing), with joint investment from Yangzhou Yangtze Investment Development Group Company Limited (Yangzhou, Jiangsu) and other seven small shareholders.
In order to meet the increasing power demand and environmental requirements, the owner plans to build two 465-MW, gas-fired, combined-cycle units in "1+1+1" single shaft layout by shutting down the two 220-MW units built in Phase III, together with associated common and support facilities, to supply more clean power to the grid. The total investment in the expansion will be about $420 million, including about $14 million for environmental protection, accounting for 3.3% of the total.
Presently, the owner is working with Jiangsu Electric Power Design Institute, the project designer, on the preliminary engineering for the project.
According to the schedule, the project will begin operations in the first half of 2014. Upon completion, the total installed capacity of Huadian Yangzhou Power Plant will increase to 1,590 MW.
