China Huaneng's 1,750-Megawatt Jinghong Hydropower Station Begins Operation in Yunnan Province

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The first unit of the 1,750-megawatt (MW) Huaneng Jinghong Hydropower Station was successfully connected to the grid and began operation in southwestern China's Yunnan province June 19, China Huaneng Group (Beijing) announced. Zhang Guobao, Director of the State Energy Bureau, and Cao Peixi, newly assigned General Manager of China Huaneng Group, attended the operation ceremony, among other leaders and representatives from the central and local governments.

The station, located in Jinghong city on the Lancang River in the Xishuangbanna Prefecture, is the largest hydropower station in the province. It is a backbone project for the nation's Great West Development Strategy and for the program to transmit power from the west to the east. The project is for power generation, along with comprehensive benefits in navigation, flood control and tourism.

The station is furnished with five 350-MW Francis hydraulic turbine-generating units each of 350 MW. The $1.48 billion project is designed to output 7.93 billion kilowatt-hours annually. Construction started in 2003, and river diversion was completed in November 2005. Two more units will begin operation this year. All units will be online by 2009. Yunnan Huaneng Lancang River Hydropower Company Limited (Hydro Lancang) (Kunming, China), a river valley hydropower developer under China Huaneng, is responsible for the building and operating the project.

Successful operation of the Jinghong Hydropower Station will be a milestone for China Huaneng's hydropower development in Yunnan province and serve as a marker for the company's progress toward adjusting the structure of its power sources, Peixi said at the ceremony.
