Construction Boom at ADM’s Nebraska Corn Processing Plant

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas) -- Ag processing giant Archer Daniels Midland Company (NYSE:ADM) (Decatur, Illinois) will soon experience a construction boom at its corn processing plant located in Columbus, Nebraska. Two major construction projects at the site totaling over $450 million in capital investment have started preliminary field work.

Currently, steel structures are going up at the plant that will be the home of a new coal-fired cogeneration power plant addition. Plans are to construct three circulating fluidized bed boilers to fire three 25-megawatt turbine generator sets that will provide additional electricity and process steam for the corn processing complex. Boldt Construction (Appleton, Wisconsin) has been awarded the general construction contract for the project, and the firm expects to be onsite for a year and a half building the greater than $150 million plant.

Across the property, ground work is getting underway on a new $300 million ethanol plant unit addition. This facility is basically an entirely new state-of-the-art plant that will be built at the site and increase ethanol production capacity at the Columbus corn milling plant to 375 million gallons annually. ADM currently produces 100 million gallons of ethanol here annually, as well as producing flour and other grain mill products, flavoring extracts and syrups and industrial organic chemicals. The licensed ethanol process technology is being provided by ICM Inc. (Colwich, Kansas) and ADM is acting as its own construction manager for the ethanol project. This project is one of eleven other ethanol plant expansion being developed in the U.S. See related August 27, 2007 news article - Illinois Ethanol Plant Expansion Construction Highlights $974 Million Industry Expansion Plans.

Both projects are expected to be completed by early to mid 2009.
