Duke Energy Continues to Invest Millions on Environmental Upgrades at North Carolina Coal-Fired Power Plant

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). With construction for the scrubber project at approximately sixty-percent completion (see related January 19, 2005 news article titled - FGD Scrubber Under Construction at 2,000-megawatt Duke Power Plant in North Carolina), Duke Power Company, a regulated subsidiary of Duke Energy Corporation (NYSE:DUK)(Charlotte, North Carolina), is moving forward with the nitrogen oxide (NOx) control project as part of a billion dollar environmental upgrade.

Being Duke Power’s second largest station, the 2,000-megawatt Marshall Power Station generates electricity from four General Electric turbine generator sets, powered by four Combustion Engineering tangential-fired dry bottom boilers, with two being supercritical. All units became operational between 1965 and 1970.

The cost-effective Non Selective Catalytic Reduction (SNCR) is the method chosen to reduce NOx emissions. SNCR technology can reduce up to 50 percent of emissions and costs much less than the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and requires less time for the installation.

Construction is scheduled to commence in the spring of 2007 on both Units #1 and #2 (350-megawatt each) and completion is scheduled for later that year. Unit #3 already has SNCR, and Unit #4 is scheduled to have it installed in 2008.

The scrubber project at Duke’s largest coal plant, the two-unit Belews Creek Power Station (Belews Creek, North Carolina), is also scheduled for construction to start this fall (see related March 29, 2005 news article on - Duke Energy in the midst of $1.9 Billion Environmental Upgrade Program for its coal-fired power plants in North Carolina).
