Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--In July, Egypt's New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) invited international wind turbine manufacturers to submit offers for a wind project in the Gulf of El-ziet. Seven bidders presented their offers, which are comprised of three packages: a prequalification package, a technical aspects package and a financial package.
The bidding companies were Enercon GmbH (Aurich, Germany); Gamesa Eolica (Madrid, Spain); Vestas Wind Systems A/S (CPH:VWS) (Randers, Denmark); Nordex SE (ETR:NDX1); Siemens AG (NYSE:SI) (Munich, Germany); Goldwind (SHE:002202) (Urumqi, China) and Acciona Energia (Sarriguren, Spain) .
Three of these companies are experienced in the Egyptian wind market. Nordex supplied 105 N43 turbines of 600 kilowatts (kW) each, totaling a capacity of 63 MW, for two projects built with cooperation of Denmark and Germany. Vestas supplied 117 V47s of 660 kW each, totaling a capacity of 77 MW, erected in Zafarana on Red Sea Coast. Gamesa won a contract to supply 480 G52 wind turbines of 850 kW each, totaling a capacity of 408 MW and a value of $800 million. All those projects are situated in Gulf Suez area, which is 180 kilometers southeast of Cairo.
NREA formed an evaluation committee to select the bid's winner in three rounds: shortlist qualified bidders; sort and analyze offers, according to the suitability of the wind turbine technical aspects to site's ambient and operational conditions; and evaluate and compare the financial offers to the project's estimated $400 million cost.
In mid-September 2010, the pre-qualification round was completed and the NREA evaluation committee rejected offers from Vestas, Nordex and Goldwind, because their qualification documentation was submitted after closing time. The committee then continued into the second round with the first round winners, and is expected to announce the winner in October 2010.
