Expansion Project at Wujing Thermal Power Plant Begins Full Operations in Shanghai

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Unit 9 of Shanghai Electric Power Company Limited's (SHA:600021) (Shanghai) Wujing Thermal Power Plant passed the 168-hour continuous, full-load test and was put into commercial operation in Shanghai on October 19, 2010. The plant's 600-megawatt (MW) expansion project is now fully completed.

Wujing Thermal Power Plant, which was built in 1958, is a large regional combined heat and power plant on the bank of the Huangpu River, and the only heat supply source in the Shanghai Wujing Chemical Industry Zone. Through five phases of expansion, installed capacity of the power plant reached 350 MW in 2004, including two 25-MW and a 37.5-MW unit that were built in Phase I; a 50-MW unit built in Phase II; a 100-MW unit built in Phase III; a 125-MW unit built in Phase IV; and a 25-MW back-pressure unit built in Phase V. Since the commissioning of the first unit in the 1950's, the plant has been operated for nearly 50 years, which is far beyond the design life of most of its units. In August 2006, the National Development and Reform Commission approved the renovation plan for Wujing Thermal Power Plant. According to the plan, two 300-MW combined heat and power units, namely units 8 and 9, will be built at the original site to replace the seven existing units built from Phase I to Phase V. To ensure the environmental quality, the seven units were shut down in advance on March 31, 2010.

The expansion project is designed by East China Electric Power Design Institute (Shanghai), a regional subsidiary of China Power Engineering Consulting Corporation (Beijing). Both units are furnished with desulfurization and denitration devices. Completion of the project will be an important contribution to energy conservation and emission reduction for the 11th Five-Year Plan in Shanghai.
