First Unit of Guangxi Yantan Hydropower Station Expansion Project Begins Operations

Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--The first unit (Unit 6) of Guangxi Guiguan Electric Power Company Limited's (Nanning, Guangxi) 600-megawatt (MW) Yantan Hydropower Station Expansion passed the 72-hour, full-load trial operation and was handed over for commercial operations in Southwest China's Guangxi autonomous region on November 24, 2013, according to an announcement from Guangxi Electric Power Survey & Design Institute (GEPDI) (Nanning, Guangxi), the project designer and a subsidiary of China Energy Engineering Corporation (Beijing), on November 26, 2013.

The Yantan Hydropower Station is located in Dahua County of Hechi City. It is one of the five gigawatt-level, large-scale hydropower stations to kick off construction in China in the 1990s. The power station has an initial capacity of 1,210 MW, with four units, each of 302.5 MW; the first unit was commissioned in September 1992, and all four units in the initial stage were commissioned in June 1995.

The expansion project comprises the open approach channel; the intake gate; the power intake tunnels; the main and auxiliary powerhouses and erection bay; the main transformer cavern; and the tailrace tunnel. The underground powerhouse is furnished with two 300-MW, Francis hydraulic turbine generating units. Both the excavation width and height of the underground powerhouse are of highly rated among operational powerhouses, or those under construction, in China. The timely commissioning of the first unit means that GEPDI has entered a new stage for the engineering of underground powerhouse, with a large span.

Construction of the expansion project kicked off in December 2010. According to the schedule, the project will be fully complete in 2014. Upon completion, the project will play an active role in ensuring the safe, stable and economic operation of Guangxi Grid.
