First Unit of Shuibuya Hydropower Station Synchronized to Grid Successfully in Hubei

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). The first unit of the Shuibuya Hydropower Station was synchronized to the Central China Power Grid and loaded to 250 megawatts successfully at Qingjiang River in Central China’s Hubei Province on July 17, 2007. Various mechanical indicators such as bearing temperatures, runouts, vibrations, and electrical parameters of the unit are all within normal ranges. This establishes that the unit is ready to be put into official operation as scheduled during this month, after a series of load tests.

The first unit of the Shuibuya Hydropower Station has passed through a series of tests, including start/stop test, no-load test, over speed test and excitation test, according to the specifications since the commissioning of the unit was initially launched on June 28, 2007.

Qingjiang Shuibuya Hydropower Station is invested by Hubei Qingjiang Hydroelectric Development Company, Limited (Hubei, China), an independent power producer jointly established by China Guodian Corporation (Beijing, China) and Hubei Energy Group Company, Limited (Wuhan, China) on January 1987. Shuibuya Hydropower Station plans to build four 460 MW large-scale turbine-generator units with a total installation capacity of 1,840 megawatts.

Shuibuya Hydropower Station is located at Badong County in Hubei Province, 117 kilometers upstream to Enshi City and 92 kilometers downstream from the Geheyan Hydropower Station (1,200 MW; Operational since 1993) on the Qingjiang River. The project is mainly comprised of a 233-meter high Concrete Faced Rockfill Dam (CFRD), the highest of its kind in the world, an underground powerhouse and an overflow spillway. The project proposal received approval from the State Council in May of 2000. The feasibility study report of the project received approval from the State Council in June 2001. Construction of the project was officially started in 2002. All four units are expected to be put into operation by the end of 2008, and the entire project will be complete by 2009.
