Guatemala's 94-Megawatt Xacbal Hydropower Plant to Start Operations in May

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Construction on the 94-megawatt (MW) Xacbal hydropower plant in Guatemala is reaching its final stage. Work on Xacbal hydroelectric power station had been delayed, but will finally begin in May 2010.

The facility is located on the Xacbal River in the San Gaspar Chajul municipality in Quiche state. The plant is equipped with two 47-MW Voith-Siemens Francis vertical turbines, which are expected to generate 486 gigawatt-hours per year.

The project was developed by Costa Rica's Electrica Matamoros SA (Quesada, Costa Rica) and is owned by Xacbal Hidro SA, a subsidiary of Terra Group (Tegucigalpa, Honduras). Solel Boneh (Guatemala City, Guatemala) started civil construction in April 2007.

The energy generated in the Xacbal facility will be transported through a 130-kilomter transmission line connected to the national grid and will supply power to more than 405,000 houses. The project aims to generate electricity based on renewable resources and to contribute to the coverage of the growing demand of the national electricity system.
