Kansas Ethanol Plant to Get Anaerobic Digester

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Western Plains Energy LLC (WPE) (Oakley, Kansas) has started construction on an anaerobic digester to supply fuel for the company's 45 million-gallon-per-year fuel ethanol plant in Oakley, Kansas.

WPE's ethanol plant sits on a 26-acre site amongst corn fields and cow pastures. The company decided to have the facility run greener by completely refiring the plant's boiler and thermal oxidizer. One way of doing that is to add an anaerobic digester that will convert 555 tons per day of manure, food waste, thin stillage, grain dust and livestock slaughter waste into a biogas (methane). This renewable gas will be used to replace 105 million Btu per hour of natural gas to fuel the plant. WPE hopes to have the digester completed and operational this spring.

Pioneer Feeders (Oakley, Kansas) will collect and supply the bovine manure and other feedstock to WPE.

The Kansas Corporation Commission's Energy Division will invest $15.6 million into this projected $28.2 million venture. The ethanol plant is located on CR 18 in Oakley, Kansas, about 175 miles west of Salinas, Kansas.
