Lake Nona Medical City Hosts "White Coat Ceremony" to Open UCF $65 Medical Education Building

Reported by Annette Kreuger, Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--On August 2, 2010, the University of Central Florida (UCF) held a "White Coat Ceremony" to celebrate the completion of a $65 million medical education building. In addition to touring the new med ed building where students will be spending untold hours learning their new craft, UCF's second class of 60 first-year medical students will receive their white lab coats.

Located on the 50-acre "Medical City" campus in Lake Nona, Florida, UCF claims the 170,000-square-foot building is the first stand-alone medical school facility in the United States to be built from the ground up in more than three decades. Designed by Hunton Brady Architects (Orlando, Florida), the four-story LEED Silver-certified building will offer tomorrow's doctors the latest technological advances in its classrooms and laboratories.

The library, an essential component to any medical school, is 85% electronic. Rather than relying on standard medical texts, which quickly become outdated, students will have access to the latest information as it becomes available. Much mention has been made of the building's unique curved design, which along with interior stairs supports a daily physical fitness challenge for students.

Balfour Beatty (Orlando) served as the project's construction manager. Planning began in 2006, with construction kicking off in early 2008.
